As the global community accelerates the transition from fossil fuels to low-carbon energy systems, questions of justice, safety, and inclusion remain unresolved for women and girls in extractive and resource-rich communities. While often framed as an environmental issue, the energy transition carries significant gender and social impacts.
This convening will examine how the just energy transition intersects with gender-based violence, economic exclusion, and environmental injustice. Centering experiences from Nigeria’s Niger Delta, the discussion will connect local realities to global energy and climate policy debates and explore how governments, companies, and international institutions can embed gender justice into just transition frameworks.
We gather at a moment when decisions about energy systems and climate action will shape not just environmental outcomes, but also the dignity, safety, and rights of women and girls. This dialogue will offer an opportunity to reflect collectively on how governments, companies and international institutions can embed gender justice, accountability, and community leadership into just transition frameworks.
