About the Event

We are writing to invite you to participate in a small, private convening in New York City on May 30, 2024, about the threat polarization poses to American society and culture. As you well know, over the past few years, we have witnessed an extreme rise in polarization, othering, and division here in the United States and worldwide. This level of polarization destabilizes electoral and political processes while posing a significant barrier to our collective efforts to solve other pressing issues.

It would be an honor to have you join us as an active participant in a small unique gathering with five prominent world leaders who have been invited as featured guests, to share their lessons grappling with extreme polarization:

— Hon. Ms. Ouided Bouchamaoui (Tunisia): leading Tunisian business woman who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2015 as a key member of the Tunisian Quartet that led the National Dialogue which produced a historic political settlement in the country that headed off the risk of civil war.
— Ai-jen Poo (US): next-generation labor leader, award-winning organizer, author, and a leading voice in the women’s movement. She is the President of the National Domestic Workers Alliance, Director of Caring Across Generations, Co-Founder of SuperMajority and Trustee of the Ford Foundation.
— President Chandrika Kumaratunga (Sri Lanka): first and only female Executive President of Sri Lanka (1994-2005) who governed through the country’s civil war, survived an assassination attempt, and later served as the Chairperson of the Office for National Unity and Reconciliation.
— Rev. Dr. Samuel Kobia (Kenya): current Chairman of Kenya’s National Cohesion and Integration Commission, having previously served as Chancellor of St. Paul’s University, General Secretary of the Geneva-based World Council of Churches, and Senior Adviser to the President of Kenya.
— Hon. Ms. Monica McWilliams (UK): cofounder of the Northern Ireland Women’s Coalition political party and its lead negotiator in the peace talks that led to the Good Friday Agreement, of which she is a signatory, following which she served as Chief Commissioner of the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission (2005-2012).

In addition to the private convening on May 30, you are invited to attend a full-day program on Friday, May 31 at the Ford Foundation as these leaders present their lessons in conversation with influential advocates and thoughtleaders from the United States. The session will also be recorded and amplified with a prominent media partner soon to be announced. (In the RSVP form, please indicate if you intend on attending both days on May 30 and 31, or only the private convening on May 30.)

The aim is to try to get to the root of how we can end polarization and begin to see common ground, with a focus on leading policymakers and opinionmakers in the United States.

Hon. Ms. Ouided Bouchamaoui (Tunisia)

Ouided Bouchamaoui was born in 1961, in the southern Tunisian city of Gabes.

In 2011, Ouided Bouchamaoui made history by becoming the first woman to hold the position of President of the Tunisian Union of Industry, Commerce, and Handicrafts (UTICA): the leading employers’ organisation representing the industrial, commercial, and artisanal sectors in Tunisia. During her tenure, she sought to promote investment and engaged in negotiations with the Tunisian General Labour Union to find solutions to various labour-related issues and strikes.

Ouided Bouchamaoui is especially renowned for her key contribution to the Tunisian National Dialogue Quartet, which was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2015. As a core member of the Quartet, she significantly and successfully contributed to facilitating democratic transition in Tunisia, which led to the holding of presidential and legislative elections and the approval of the 2014 Constitution.

In addition to her business endeavors, Ouided Bouchamaoui has consistently demonstrated a commitment to community work through the Hedi Bouchamaoui Foundation for the advancement of education and human resource development. She has also assumed the role of a Peace Envoy, traveling around the world to explain the importance of dialogue and communication in times of crisis and share the experience of the Tunisian National Dialogue. In the context of her ongoing commitment to gender diversity and women’s empowerment, she also works on developing government and private sector initiatives aimed at promoting gender diversity in the workforce and communities. Ouided Bouchamaoui has been appointed Professor of Practice of Diplomacy and Conflict Resolution at NYU Abu Dhabi, effective April 1.

General Óscar Naranjo (Colombia)

For 36 years, General Óscar Naranjo served in the Colombian National Police, where his career was marked by major achievements in combating crime, spearheading institutional modernisation, and fostering a profound sense of trust among citizens. In 2007, he was elevated to the position of Director General of the Police. Throughout his tenure, he garnered numerous accolades, including the Semana Magazine Tribute for his exceptional leadership, and recognition as one of the 500 most influential people in the world by Foreign Policy magazine in its Power Issue.

After his service in the National Police, General Naranjo assumed the helm of the Latin American Institute of Citizenship at the Tecnológico y de Educación Superior de Monterrey (TEC), providing expert guidance to the Mexican federal government until 2014. That same year, he was appointed Minister of the Presidency for Post-Conflict, Human Rights, and Security, a role he held until November 2015.

In his pivotal role as Plenipotentiary Negotiator for the Government of Colombia in the peace talks with the FARC, he played a crucial role in the construction of the Final Agreement signed in 2016. In March 2017, he was elected by Congress as Vice President of the Republic of Colombia, tasked with overseeing the development and implementation of the Final Agreement; spearheading the fight against organised crime; ensuring citizen security; formulating and implementing a comprehensive policy for the promotion, defence, and protection of human rights; and advising and coordinating the preparation, structuring, and development of a comprehensive public policy for the fight against illicit drugs. He served as Vice President until August 2018. On May 1, 2023, General Naranjo assumed the presidency of the Social Council of the Universidad Internacional de La Rioja in Colombia, where he plays a key role in promoting the right to higher education and spearheading initiatives aimed at strengthening peaceful coexistence and safeguarding human rights. He also serves as a distinguished member of the Expert Advisory Group for IFIT’s Peace Treaty Initiative.

Rev. Dr. Samuel Kobia (Kenya)

Commissioner Rev. Dr. Samuel Kobia is the Chairman of Kenya’s National Cohesion and Integration Commission: a unique statutory body and institution to promote national identity and values, mitigate ethno-political competition and ethnically motivated violence, eliminate discrimination on ethnic, racial and religious basis and promote national reconciliation and healing.

Previously, he served as Senior Advisor on Cohesion, Peace and Conflict Resolution in the Executive Office of the President and Cabinet Affairs. From 2007-2018, he was Chancellor of St. Paul’s University. From 2011-2015, Dr. Kobia also served as a Commissioner in the Judicial Service Commission, which recruits Kenyan judges and oversights the judiciary. In addition, from 2010-2012, he served as Ecumenical Special Envoy for Sudan and South Sudan. Prior to that, he served from 2004-2009 as General Secretary of the Geneva-based World Council of Churches, having been the General Secretary of the National Council of Churches of Kenya at an earlier stage in his career.

He has vast experience in mediation and dialogue. Currently, he coordinates dialogue platforms as safe spaces for interactions between Kenyans of diverse stations and government to address pressing issues. The fruits of the dialogues include peaceful co-existence, healing and reconciliation, peaceful resolution of conflicts and national cohesion.

He holds a Master degree in Urban Planning from MIT, a doctorate in International Relations from Geneva School of Diplomacy, and a doctorate in Theology from the Christian Theological Seminary. He is a visiting Professor to Wesley Colleges in USA and UK. He has previously held a fellowship at Harvard Divinity School and a visiting professorship at Cambridge University. He is the author of several books, including Dialogue Matters.

Hon. Ms. Monica McWilliams (UK)

Monica McWilliams is a signatory of the 1998 Good Friday Peace Agreement and served as a member of the first Northern Ireland Legislative Assembly, representing the Northern Ireland Women's Coalition political party which she co-founded at the multi-party peace talks.

She was the Chief Commissioner of the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission from 2005-2011, responsible for delivering the advice on a Bill of Rights for Northern Ireland. She currently serves on the Independent Reporting Commission on the disbandment of paramilitary organisations.

Her memoir, ‘Stand Up, Speak Out’, was published in 2021. As former Irish prime minister Bertie Ahern wrote at the time: “Monica McWilliams undoubtedly played one of the most pivotal roles in the Northern Ireland peace process.”

Monica has worked in a range of war-torn societies and published the first longitudinal study on domestic violence during political conflict. She is a joint recipient of the Profile in Courage Award from the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation. Monica is an Emeritus Professor at Ulster University and was elected a member of the Royal Irish Academy.

Danielle Allen

Danielle Allen is James Bryant Conant University Professor at Harvard University and Director of the Allen Lab for Democracy Renovation at Harvard Kennedy School's Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation. She is a professor of political philosophy, ethics, and public policy. She is also a seasoned nonprofit leader, democracy advocate, tech ethicist, distinguished author, and mom.

Claudia Yoli Ferla

Claudia Yoli Ferla serves as the Executive Director of MOVE Texas, a dynamic nonprofit dedicated to building the political power of young people throughout Texas. Born in Venezuela and proudly raised in El Paso, Texas, Claudia harnesses her unique perspective as a DACA recipient to champion the voices of young Texans eager to drive community change. Her career spans various leadership roles in political and advocacy organizations, including Battleground Texas, Texas Freedom Network, and United We Dream. Before joining MOVE Texas, Claudia was the co-Executive Director at Deeds Not Words, where she cultivated young leadership and established chapters in over 25 educational institutions across Texas. Her previous tenure as Director of Community Affairs and Media Relations for Texas State Senator José Rodríguez further solidified her commitment to social justice and civil rights.A proud beneficiary of the DACA, Claudia is dedicated to ensuring that immigrant narratives are recognized and respected. She has collaborated with fellow young leaders to register voters, support progressive candidates, and endorse policies that enhance community well-being. At MOVE Texas, Claudia leverages her personal journey and professional acumen to inspire a vibrant team of young organizers, shaping a future where youth leadership is not just celebrated but instrumental in societal progress.

Carrie Joy Grimes

Carrie Joy “CJ” Grimes is the founder and Chief Executive of WorkMoney, an organization of over 6 million members dedicated to ensuring that everyday Americans can afford to live good lives. CJ has over two decades of experience working to improve the financial lives of people in communities across America. She founded WorkMoney during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 to deliver credible and relevant financial resources and information to everyday Americans. Since its launch in 2020, WorkMoney has grown to over 6 million members across all 50 states. Most importantly, CJ is mom to an amazing teenage daughter. She grew up in a working and middle class evangelical family, attended Northern Illinois University, and currently lives in the Pacific Northwest with her family.

Brian Hooks

Brian Hooks is chairman and CEO of Stand Together, a philanthropic community that works with business leaders and philanthropists to address the country’s biggest challenges. Brian is also president of the Charles Koch Foundation. Previously, he served as executive director and COO of the Mercatus Center at George Mason University, where he led strategy and operations for a growing research, education, and public policy center. He is co-author with Charles Koch of the national bestseller Believe in People: Bottom Up Solutions for a Top Down World. In 2021, the TIME100 Next list recognized Brian as a leader shaping the future of his field. Brian serves on the boards of the Mercatus Center, Cosmos Institute, Economic Policy Innovation Center (EPIC), Institute for Humane Studies, Reason Foundation, and The Just Trust. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan and lives in Alexandria, Virginia, with his wife and daughter.

Ai-jen Poo

Ai-jen Poo is a next-generation labor leader, award-winning organizer, author, and a leading voice in the women’s movement. She is the president of the National Domestic Workers Alliance, executive director of Caring Across Generations and a trustee of the Ford Foundation. Poo is a nationally recognized expert on the care economy and is the author of the celebrated book The Age of Dignity: Preparing for the Elder Boom in a Changing America. Follow her at @aijenpoo.

john a. powell

john a. powell is Director of the Othering and Belonging Institute and Professor of Law, African American, and Ethnic Studies at the University of California, Berkeley. He was previously the Executive Director at the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity at the Ohio State University, and prior to that, the founder and director of the Institute for Race and Poverty at the University of Minnesota. john formerly served as the National Legal Director of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). He is a co-founder of the Poverty & Race Research Action Council and serves on the boards of several national and international organizations. john led the development of an “opportunity-based” model that connects affordable housing to education, health, health care, and employment and is well-known for his work developing the frameworks of “targeted universalism” and “othering and belonging” to effect equity-based interventions. john has taught at numerous law schools including Harvard and Columbia University. His latest book is Racing to Justice: Transforming our Concepts of Self and Other to Build an Inclusive Society.

Mark Freeman

Mark Freeman is the Founder and Executive Director of the Institute for Integrated Transitions (IFIT), a non-governmental organisation that recently celebrated its tenth anniversary as a global peacebuilding innovator. A leading expert in political transitions and high-level peace negotiations with more than 30 years of experience, Mr Freeman is regularly consulted for advice on crisis management and conflict resolution. He has worked in countries including Ukraine, Venezuela, Colombia, Afghanistan, Bolivia, Bosnia, Burundi, DRC, The Gambia, El Salvador, Kenya, Mauritania, Morocco, Nepal, Serbia, Sri Lanka, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey, and Zimbabwe. Prior to founding IFIT, Mr. Freeman was Chief of External Relations and a member of the Senior Management Team at the International Crisis Group, a leading global conflict prevention organisation. He also helped launch the International Center for Transitional Justice and served as its first Director of International Affairs. Earlier in his career he worked at the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in New York and as a corporate lawyer in Toronto. A widely recognised thought leader in international law and human rights, Mr. Freeman is the co-author of Negotiating Transitional Justice (Cambridge, 2020), which draws upon his years as an adviser inside the Colombian peace talks in Havana. He is also the author of Necessary Evils: Amnesties and the Search for Justice (Cambridge, 2010) and Truth Commissions and Procedural Fairness (Cambridge, 2006), and the co-author of International Human Rights Law: Essentials of Canadian Law (Irwin Law, 2004). Mr. Freeman holds a Bachelor of Arts from McGill University, a Juris Doctor from the University of Ottawa Faculty of Law, and a Master of Laws from Columbia Law School where he was a Human Rights Fellow and James Kent Scholar. He has been a Lecturer-in-Law at KU Leuven and the University of Ottawa, and a Visiting Professor at Queen’s University Faculty of Law. Kay Bell, the current Bronx Poet Laureate, is an Educator, Storyteller and music enthusiast. As Bronx Poet Laureate, Kay’s work focuses on strengthening the spirit of creativity and promoting a passion for poetry, literacy, and education across the Bronx, in an effort to inspire a new generation of writers and poets. Kay is also the author of two collections of poetry, including her book Diary of an Intercessor, published by Finishing Line Press. Her poetry aims to weave the language of activism with the voice of the marginalized to confront and interrogate literary spaces of oppression. About the Film

A sneak New York screening of this award-winning film, fresh from screenings at the Berlin, San Francisco and True/False Film Festivals. During a stifling summer in Laredo, Texas, two adolescents stargaze from a car’s rooftop, share worries that they could be deported, and fret over their futures while rebelling against present circumstances. Directors Estefanía “Beba” Contreras and Silvia Del Carmen Castaños spotlight their own lives, revealing the poetry and passion that fire young spirits in a world that wants to control their bodies and their citizenship. As their state moves towards draconian anti-abortion legislation, Beba and Silvia fight back with their words and their Sharpie pens. Goofy and rebellious in equal amounts, the film tenderly centers this soulful friendship as the pair acknowledge their feelings for one another in poems, songs, and the headlong sense of adventure their bond brings to daily living. - San Francisco Film Festival.
